playori Adventure that moves and connects
Sydney-made ยท Ages 2-8 ยท In beta

Busy days don't have to mean missed moments.

Ten minutes. One story. Both of you off the couch.

Playori is a narrated audio adventure for young children. Your child picks a world, and the story sends them bear-crawling past the temple guards, spelling out the word that opens the door, and pulling the sock off the Pirate King's foot. Your living room, a hotel room, grandma's place, wherever you've got a bit of space. Play it together, or let them run it on their own.

Six worlds

One map. Your child picks where tonight goes.

Every world works for every age; the story adjusts, not the child. 120 stories are written so far, with more every week. Tap a destination to see what happens there.

Adventure

The gap

Most screen time asks for their attention. None of it asks for yours.

Right now

Screens hold their attention but nothing comes back out
Children sitting still for hours at a stretch
The screen-off tantrum, every single time
Guilt about how much of the day it's eating
Being in the same room without being together

With Playori

Narrated adventures that get them up and moving
Your child is the hero, not the audience
Spelling and problem-solving hidden inside the plot
A clear ending, so the story finishes instead of being cut off
Fifteen minutes together, or fifteen minutes to breathe

How it works

Two modes. One promise.

Whether you want to be in the story tonight or you need fifteen minutes to get dinner on, Playori is built for both, without the guilt of either.

Parent-Participation mode

The villain in tonight's story is you.

You don't have to perform or plan anything. The story tells you both what to do. You just have to show up.

1Play leapfrog across the river to unlock the next chapter
2You become Indiana Bones. Put a sock on your foot; your child has to pull it off to win the map back
3At the end: "When did you feel brave?" One question, asked while you're both still on the floor
Self-Play mode

Downtime that actually does something.

No autoplay, no feed, no zoning out. Your child moves, thinks and explores through a story where they're the one making it happen.

1Pick a world: adventure, dinosaur, fairytale, sea, space or superhero
2"Stand on one leg and flap your arms to fly". The faster they flap, the faster they escape
3Spell O-P-E-N to open the cave, tapped on screen, never spoken aloud
Move and growMovement built into every scene, progressing from squat to jump to balance to hopping.
Learn sidewaysSpelling, phonics and memory hidden inside the plot rather than bolted on as a quiz.
Actually bondA shared memory that outlasts the ten minutes it took to make.
No guiltTen minutes of screen time that leaves the room louder, not quieter.

Why now

We're not competing with the tablet. We're upgrading the ritual.

The story before bed is the one thing almost every parent already does, already buys books for, and increasingly feels they're doing badly. That's the fifteen minutes we're after, not another hour to feel guilty about.

64% โ†’ 52%

The share of 5-to-8 year olds who read daily has fallen twelve points since 2017, while total screen time held steady.

of parents are worried about what screen media is doing to their kids, and three quarters also believe screens can support learning and connection. Parents aren't anti-screen. They're anti-passive.

Built for children

No live microphone. Nothing typed freely. Nothing improvised.

Those are three of the four things Playori will never do, decided before a line of code was written.

Why I'm building this

"My daughter pointed at the door and said, 'No, no Daddy outside.' She was asking me to leave. We'd lost the connection."

I was leaving before my kids woke up and getting home after they were asleep. So instead of reading her a story one night, I made one up: choose-your-own-adventure, the two of us crawling around the apartment hunting treasure. The next night she asked for it again.

Playori exists to hand that fifteen minutes to parents who want it but don't know how to start it. My background is exercise science and psychology, which maps almost exactly onto the two halves of this product: age-appropriate physical progression, and early-childhood development.

One day they'll stop asking you to play.
